winter update I

1)  My Maggie turned 6 this past weekend. Six years old. It's outrageously ridiculous. I feel like I've missed half her life. I'm only beginning to know her, and I'm excited to find out who she is and who she will become.

2)  My husband surprised me with dinner on Monday night at my very favorite restaurant. It was divine. We made a commitment around a year and a half ago to try to only frequent local restaurants. Sometimes it's tougher than others because local tends to be more costly, but it's been totally worth it. I usually leave a chain restaurant unhappy. I leave Coco's Bistro so incredibly happy and relaxed, every time. This time I had the grilled tilapia with mushroom risotto. I actually feel happy just thinking about it. Oh, and the hummus for an appetizer. Love, love their hummus.

3)  Baby R is apparently allergic to penicillin. I was certain it was roseola since it  presented just like roseola until the second day of the rash. Then it got a little ugly. The rash looked weird, Baby R was incredibly unhappy and clearly in pain, and it just continued to get worse. I didn't think allergy first off because she had actually finished the entire course of amoxicillin the night the rash appeared. I learned today, however, that with a drug allergy, it could 21 days from the start of the drug until you see a reaction. That's a LONG time! Scary stuff.

4)  I've really stepped up my reading game. I've read three whole fiction books in the past three weeks. That's right. I can read fiction. I'm not sure what the tipping point was, but I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that I'm basically reading chick lit. Ok, it's a little more substantial than chick lit, and it's actually very well written. It's definitely not Tolstoy though. Also, I finished a couple non-fiction books. On my to-read list now:  The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (Rebecca Skloot), One Thousand Gifts (Ann Voskamp), and I really need to finish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

5)  Goal for 2011: improving my blog editing skills. Why can't I get the pictures I inserted to appear side by side? Grr.
